At CalWest, we believe the recruiting experience should have all of those features - and more.

As the President of CalWest, I’ve worked with schools and candidates just like you to develop expertise in the ideal independent and private school placement experience.

Since 2003, we’ve specialized in the placement of educators and school leaders throughout the western region of the U.S. Over the years we’ve developed a reputation for forging deep relationships to meet each school’s unique needs in terms of positions, experience, culture and fit.

CalWest is not Indeed or Monster or LinkedIn. We’re not Glassdoor or Craigslist or your local newspaper’s classifieds section.

Personalization is at the heart of what we do. CalWest provides placement services that focus on pairing deeply qualified candidates with outstanding independent and private schools.

As a result, our process is highly selective and focused on quality, not quantity. Only about 1 in 5 candidates are selected to be in our database.

Another result is a highly evolved placement model. In the 2017-2018 school year, we implemented a new recruiting model. We provide one-to-one services to select client schools - services refined to meet the needs of the ever-evolving, ever-improving independent and private school industry.

This means:

  • Refined position descriptions
  • Targeted and refined candidate sourcing
  • Even Stronger candidate pools

Our CalWest team is comprised of former heads of school, educators, and industry professionals who work diligently to offer these highly personalized services.

Through our CalWest Select Client Program we will support a limited number of outstanding select client schools.  In turn, candidates will only receive interviews at schools with positions that strongly align with their skills and abilities.

With these highly targeted, expertly vetted candidate-to-position opportunities, both schools and candidates can focus on building long-term, valuable, collaborative relationships.

Ultimately, it’s those relationships that create the excellent environment and education students need to learn and thrive.

Our new CalWest approach is piloting during the 2017-2018 school year. Our plan is to roll it out more broadly in the 2018-19 school year.

The genesis of CalWest Educators was in 1994, when Lee Miller was hired by Teachers On Reserve as a part-time interviewer of potential substitute teachers for independent schools in the Los Angeles area.

Within a year, she realized that there was a need to recruit permanent teachers as well and that became her full-time specialty with recruiting expanding all the way to the East Coast.

In 2003, together with her husband, Steve, Lee created CalWest Educators Placement and widened its services to include recruiting and placement of heads of school and other senior leaders for private and independent schools throughout the western United States.
