Christopher Fleischner ("Fleisch"), President

Fleisch joined CalWest in 2003. Previously, he worked in several education-related start-ups in California. While managing SCORE! Learning Centers in California, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, he also worked with elementary and middle school students. He graduated with a BA in International Relations from Stanford University and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and Human Resources. He attended St. Paul's School for grades 9-12. His K-8 years were spent at an independent school that his two children now attend in his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA, and he is currently a member of their Board of Trustees. 

Betty A. Linville, Executive Vice President  

Betty is responsible for CalWest's operation and overall strategic goals, while implementing the company's vision and mission.  She joined CalWest in 2008. Previously, she worked as a consultant in marketing and has been instrumental in the success of a number of startup businesses in financial planning, design and manufacturing. She attended Boston University and the University of the Americas in Mexico.  Betty was very involved as a parent at her son’s independent school, Oakwood, where he attended grades K-12. She taught Spanish to the students in kindergarten and first grades along with providing leadership and support in all fundraising events. Through her work, Betty consistently demonstrates her vigorous commitment to ensuring that the best educators are available for employment and matched to the specialized needs of the independent schools CalWest serves.

Dawn Fleischner, Co-Owner, Vice President of Administration

After a decade of behind-the-scenes contributions, Dawn officially joined CalWest with the acquisition of the company in 2013. She brings her enthusiasm for finance, operations, communications and strategy in her role supporting the company and team.

A southern California native, Dawn graduated Magna Cum Laude from the UCLA honors program with Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and French. She has many years of experience in the for-profit education industry, as well as nonprofit consulting and board member engagement. Dawn stayed home to raise their two children for the past 10 years before returning to the workforce with CalWest. Now 11 and 13, Dawn and Fleisch’s kids are becoming more self-reliant with both parents traveling for work and devoting many hours to the success of CalWest.  

Candice Coker, Director of Placements    

Candice manages the recruitment of candidates and oversees their search process. After earning a B.A. in English and Writing from Georgia Southern University, she spent five years as a classroom teacher, specializing in reading and literacy. While teaching, she obtained a Master’s in Education, was appointed grade level chair, served on several leadership committees, and was selected to represent her school as Teacher of the Year. In 2011, looking for a new adventure, she relocated to California and joined the CalWest team. 

Leah Biegeleisen, School Relations Manager

Leah provides support to our client schools as the leader of our School Relations team. She is an LA transplant who relocated from Georgia after having studied Writing, Linguistics, and Spanish at Georgia Southern University. With more than ten years of experience in customer service and management in the hospitality industry, Leah joined CalWest in 2012 as a way to hone her skills and be a part of a company whose focus is on building strong interpersonal relationships.

Margo Hohsfield, Outreach Coordinator

Margo joined the CalWest Team in 2014 after relocating from Colorado. She received a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Colorado at Boulder. In her role as Outreach Coordinator, she maintains the company’s social media presence, sources potential applicants, and promotes CalWest through marketing and communication initiatives. Margo is committed to building and strengthening relationships with educators nationwide.

Mary Balash, Candidate Coordinator  

Mary joined CalWest in 2014 to support candidates in all areas of their job search. She is a Southern California native who studied Sociology at University of California Santa Barbara. Her work experience comprises coaching youth sports, mentoring and tutoring, textbook writing and publishing, and conducting research on students’ social and emotional development. Mary obtained her Master’s in Sociology of Education at New York University, where she also worked as part of a consultant team in a resolution agreement between U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights and White Plains Public School District.

Maddie Toll, Candidate Associate  

Maddie is a committed member of CalWest’s Candidate Team, ensuring all educators gain the most from their job search. A Los Angeles native, she graduated from Occidental College in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Politics and minors in both Education and Urban & Environmental Policy. With prior experience in school advocacy, political campaigning, and event planning, her acquired skills were easily adapted to meet the needs of the CalWest team. She has been a member of CalWest since 2015.

Emmy Jin, School Relations Associate  

Emmy is dedicated to building supportive relationships while connecting schools with top educators and administrators. In 2016, she brought her enthusiasm for education and diversity to CalWest. Previously, she worked with underserved K-12 students as a homework center coordinator at the Los Angeles Public Library. Originally from Washington, she graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Sociology and a minor in Mathematics from Western Washington University. Additionally, Emmy received her MA in Sociology from SUNY Albany, where she taught and mentored undergraduate students. Her past experience also includes work in academic and market research as well as data management and analysis.

Alex Samuels, School Relations Associate  

Alex collaborates with the school relations team to maintain clear lines of communication between CalWest and our client schools. He is a Colorado native who moved to California to attend Pomona College, where he received a B.A. in Linguistics and Cognitive Science with a minor in Chemistry. Before joining CalWest in 2016, he worked variously in academic research, event preparation, and school policy. He is always pursuing his passions for building inclusive classrooms and for cultivating relationships with those around him.
