When schools have a need for a Senior Leader they will often engage Cal/West Educators to conduct an intensive Retained Search. Although each Search is customized to the specific need, there are some typical elements of the process.
Cal/West Phase 1: BUILD THE SEARCH STRATEGY
- Meet with school constituents to identify the unique needs of the school that will influence and clarify the candidate profile (through customized focus groups, in-depth questions, one-on-one meetings, etc.)
- Define the profile of the ideal candidate including skills, experience, and leadership traits
- Customize the position description to align it with the school's vision and long-term strategy
- Produce a formal, written profile of the school and the leadership position
Cal/West Phase 2: IDENTIFY AND ASSESS POTENTIAL CANDIDATES
- Seek out and identify prospective candidates through a variety of resources including, networking, outreach, research, personal referrals, database, professional associations, advertising, and internet postings.
- Interview, analyze, and thoroughly evaluate applicants
- Develop profiles of top candidates to present to the Search Committee or Head of School.
Cal/West Phase 3: PRESENTATION AND FACILITATION OF CANDIDATE INTERVIEWS
- Present a panel of qualified, interested, and enthusiastic candidates
- Conduct initial reference checks.
- Facilitate interviews between the search committee and the semi-finalist candidates
Cal/West Phase 4: SUCCESSFUL HIRE AND TRANSITION
- Advise during contract negotiations as needed
- Assist as needed in notifying the school and greater community of the hire
- Monitor through the first year the success of the placement from both the school and successful candidate's perspective
