What is a Diversity Symposium?
At our Diversity Symposiums, educators meet with administrators and other school representatives to learn more about schools and their commitment to multiculturalism, both in the student body and among faculty and staff. The Symposium evenings begin with an informative speaker, followed by an interactive discussion. The final portion of the evening is a school showcase where candidates have time to visit with people from many different schools and hear more about the philosophy, educational program, vision, and mission of each institution. There is ample time to begin relationships and take advantage of networking opportunities.
How Does a Connection Event Work?
Before each Connection Event, we send school administrators portfolios of candidates whose experience, background, and qualifications match open positions at those schools. In selected cases, even when there is not an opening, we will submit a candidate to a school if we feel that there is an especially good fit!
At the Connection Event, candidates and school representatives will have time to meet for a “first round” interview. Prior to Connection Events, many administrators will have set up interview appointments. It is a great time to meet many people in one location! School administrators will also continue to review information and conduct interviews during the Events. These face-to-face meetings can provide ample time to make a good impression that will last!
Candidates can help with this process by being appropriately proactive: leaving messages for administrators, talking with Cal/West representatives about specific schools, being readily accessible in case an administrator finds 5-10 minutes in their schedule for a mini-interview, etc. No one gets hired immediately – if an administrator is interested in continuing the process, the candidate will be invited to visit the school at a future date.
Being at an event is vital to a candidate’s chances of meeting with school personnel. If a candidate does not live near the school, or does not plan a visit to the area, the chances of getting hired are reduced, because it is unlikely that a school will hire a candidate without having at least one face-to-face interview. However, if an administrator knows that a candidate will be present at a Connection Event, he or she can plan to interview the candidate there.

Please Note: Connection Events are for educators who have already been accepted as candidates by Cal/West Educators Placement. If you are not a candidate, please submit your preliminary materials first, by following the instructions found here.
